[ Abstract ]
This article tracks the activities that the Ministry of Public Works developed from 1914 to 1936 to advance in the process of domestic modernization. These years are quite interesting for the researches as they cover the span when the State became fully aware of the role it had to play and the social demands on such services were increasingly growing. Some of them are analyzed together with the existing tensions between that perception and the real possibilities to fulfil all the projects and ideas, within a State burdened by many pending subjects for the consolidation of its democratic institutions and the reform of the Treasury and the fiscal system. The tasks assigned to the ministry along these years are also described through the reconstruction of flowcharts and, although briefly, to provide some details about the incumbents.
