[ Abstract ]

This paper is describing the parabola of the Italian railway engineers starting from the Unification in 1861, when they were quite backward if compared with their colleagues operating abroad, to the years following World War I. It's a professional path, which brings them to excellent levels, in some sectors, under the organizational and technical profile. Nationalization of railways in 1905 represents, from this point of view, a crucial historical moment for their professional training.
