Key Words: Utiel, railway station, Baeza, Madrid-Valencia line.

[ Abstract ]

Since its first studies the railway station of Utiel (Valencia) was projected as a middle station, inside the “direct” Madrid – Valencia line. But due to politic and commercial reasons it operated as a true railway terminal of the Valencia – Utiel line during 62 years (until 1947), carrying an intense commercial activity out with an area of influence, which affected to a wide wine-growing region, but also with other products. When in 1927 was planned the Baeza – Utiel railway line (as a part of the large transverse axis project from Algeciras to Saint Girons, in France) and was created a junction on the Madrid–Valencia line at Utiel, the station was enlarged and totally renovated in order to potentially accommodate the anticipated rise in movement of both passengers and goods as an important railway hub.
