[ Abstract ]

Un the second half of the 19th century in Colonial Cuba appeared a group of companies dedicated to insure slave labor and reimbursed slave owners when their slaves died or lose value. These companies, which are only paralleled by some of the last slave countries to abolish slavery, as it is the case of Brazil or the United States, acted in an environment with a series of circumstances and situations that make the insurance instrument hardly comparable to other types of insurance.

The purpose of this paper is to describe and analyze the companies aimed at these activity in Cuba in the late 19th century and to pose a conclusion on the causes of his failure.
