[ Abstract ]

In Argentina the sanitation service started in the late 19th century but limited to a small sphere of influence: the only places served were the biggest cities. These early projects were mainly accomplished by private enterprises but, on the last years of the century, the Federal State took charge of this task. In the following years a special division was created for this kind of service: Obras Sanitarias de la Nación, founded in 1912. The aim of this paper is to prove that this government department became a public company that achieved its goals with efficiency ensuring that a significant part of the population had access to drinkable water and basic sanitation. To accomplish these ends Obras Sanitarias de la Nación had a good degree of technical and organizational autarchy from the federal government, which gave the funding needed. This business organization had its peak in the 1930s, although after 1943 it began losing the autarchy that was its typical feature.
