Key Words: Roads, Enlightenment, construction, Heritage.

[ Abstract ]

During the reign of Carlos III, within the Enlightenment program of development of transport infrastructures as a way of modernizing the country , it was promoted the construction of a road from Malaga to the neighbouring town of Vélez.

It is, therefore, one of the first modern roads of Spain. Its construction happened between 1787 and 1789, under the technical direction of military engineers able of planning and constructing the notable earthworks and auxiliary structures that the layout incorporated.

For almost hundred years it was the main communication infrastructure of the region, until the end of the XIXth Century, when it was replaced with another more modern road.

Though its use was then lost, this infrastructure did not disappear. A great number of sections of its structure and most important elements have been preserved until today. Nowadays these sections constitute a valuable heritage of the History of structural engineering. The aim of this paper is giving notice of them.
