[ Abstract ]

Railway transportation systems played a key role in the West Africa’s colonization process. In Senegal, the main terrestrial communication axis (Dakar-Saint-Louis, Thiès-Kayes) was built between 1882 and 1909, and favored the expansion of the market economy as well as the development of the cash-crop cultures. Both railways and the modernization of oceanic port infrastructures at Dakar and Rufisque encouraged the growth of the external trade in Senegal. This paper analyzes the long-term consequences of an extrovert transport model.
