SUMMARY TST 27
Key Words:
Canal of Castile, railways, roads, transport system.
[ Abstract ]
The paper analyzes the role of the Canal of Castile in the development of communication routes from Mid-Eighteenth Century to the first third of the Twentieth, taking into consideration its North Branch. This impressive public work of the Enlightenment acted as a key element in the articulation of the transport system in this area. Thus, it had a decisive impact on the lay-out of railway lines: the line from Alar del Rey to Santander is seen as an extension of the Canal towards the sea, while the branch from Valladolid to Alar became a direct competitor because it was a parallel route. Also it promoted the improvement of the road network, stimulating the building of different regional (Palencia-Santander), provincial (Burgos and Palencia) or local (district or neighborhood) highways. As a result, the Canal of Castile favored that the villages located along had a better connection and helped to establish a communication corridor to join the Castilian meseta with the Cantabrian coast through the axis Valladolid-Palencia-Santander which has existed up until today.
