[ Abstract ]

This paper deals with the problem of supplying water to San Cristóbal de La Habana since its final settlement in 1519. It describes how the city depended on the water supply from the Almendares river through the Zanja Real (1592) and the Fernando VII aqueduct (1835) up to the final years of the 19th century, which was already insufficient in the second half of the century for the needs of a city with a population of 100 000. An assessment of the project drawn by Francisco de Albear y Fernández de Lara is presented as well a historical survey of the associated construction process, from the beginning of the works in 1858 to their completion as the Albear Aqueduct in 1893. Final considerations are presented on the merits of this outstanding engineering work.
