[ Abstract ]

The history of the universalization of access to tap water in Paris is often read under the only light of the paradigm of the integrated network that was built under Haussmann. The object of this article is instead to try and refine this vision, in focusing on different moments that allow one to have a more nuanced idea of this process. The first of these moments is that of a first universalization process, before Haussmann, in minor mode, through the generalisation of street fountains. The second of the moments the article focuses on is that of the much slower than generally assumed path of universalization under and after Haussmann. For this period, we examine how entire generations of Parisian have experienced precarious conditions of access to quality water. By doing this we also would like to contribute to ongoing debates on models of water distribution and more generally on the relationship between public and private intiative”.
