Key Words:
Boycotts, Gas, Consumers' strikes.
[ Abstract ]
At the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century, private gas companies were more and more criticized because of their huge profits and the high price of gas. In several cities, gas consumers organized boycotts against monopolies, which were called at that time « strikes ». These boycotts were seen as a part of a larger consumer movement, based on new consumer organizations and protests against the rising cost of living. In reality, gas consumers’ strikes were also an ordinary struggle between small and big businesses.
