[ Abstract ]

The socioeconomic changes and the existence of new transport infrastructures contri-buted to turn the fishing town of Castro Urdiales into a small, but modern, industrial city.
At the same time, the layout of several railways and the harbour facilities renewal generated important modifications of the city map, whose urban area expanded for the first time since the Middle Ages although the railway network constituted a new iron wall that restricted it. Once their original function was vanished, some yesterday’s infrastructures of transport that have survived are today’s cultural heritage with a great potential like resource for the land development.
