[ Abstract ]

The economic opportunities that the colonial trade with America brought and later in the 19th century that of the grapevine did that the northwestern Cadiz region populations were competing for obtaining a better position within the transport network. This scenary generated the appearance of several plans to improve the communications, initially with the preponderance of the ones aimed to overcome the problems of the river courses; but the introduction of railways changed the preferences in favour of land transport, although both means of transport could have been complementary. How and why did this change take place? We will try to answer this question in this paper that outlines the main modernization projects of the transport system from the middle of the 17th century to the beginning of the 20th century.
