[ Abstract ]
The relationship between the Barcelona port infrastructures and the rail network of the Catalan capital was initiated starting from the diverse projects implemented during the second half of the 19th Century for the enlargement of the Barcelona port.
The abovementioned projects formed part, in certain cases, of the Plans for the Extension of the city of Barcelona and were determined by the need to expand the port facilities of the city, because of the constant increase of the industrial concentration from the first decades of the 19th century. This was an industrial activity whose demand of raw materials originated a remarkable increase of the port traffic, favoured by the technical improvements that had begun to apply to ships, such as the implementation of the steam-engine.
In this sense, the progressive expansion of railways in the city and the need to build a rail network for the service of the port and his docks that was connected with the different rail stations of Barcelona, determined the planning of both railway projects, closely related with the enlargement of the Barcelona port.
