[ Abstract ]
Local public services have been a traditional scenario of confrontations between local governments and private concessionaires. The article aims to analyze the complexity of these relationships, starting from what happened in the gas sector of Galicia, since its establishment in the city of A Coruña in the mid-nineteenth century until the Spanish Civil War. The paper is divided into two major blocks. In a first section, we examine the implementation and development of gas lighting during the stage of monopoly of energy supply. The second one starts with the competition that electric lighting began to raise by the late nineteenth century, and the subsequent reformulation of relations between municipalities and gas companies.
