[ Abstract ]

Nearly all the railway companies had a little number of large facilities to undertake the heavy repairs of their own locomotives and rolling stock. These great railway workshops have been special industrial establishments of exceptional importance in urban as well as railway worlds. This paper, an advance of a doctoral thesis in preparation, is an approach to the main characteristics of European railways own workshops during more than one hundred and fifty year’s life time. Today, despite his decreasing role into railway running, are facilities to bear in mind, not only by his technical function, but as urban or heritage value too.
