[ Abstract ]
The Channel Tunnel linking Great Britain to Continental Europe derives from numerous technological trials and adjustments, as well as political compromises. Since 1994, this major infrastructure has been filling a key missing link in the European transport network. Its contribution to a modal transfer between road and rail was expected to be high. After a decade in operation, the "Chunnel" has proved to be a remarkable rolling road, but is less successfull as a rail freight corridor. This emphasises the fact that transport corridors need a complex array of conditions to work satisfactorily. This case study gives a good insight in key success factors of large transport systems.
