[ Abstract ]

The article examines the processes that Mexico and Chile followed to acquire railroad technology from the United States between 1880 and 1950. Even though technological imports were embedded in nationalist economic policies that aimed at increasing State control over transport and, more generally, over development policies, the acquisition of railroad technology "Americanized" the countries in their technical norms, working habits, and equipment, as well as in their ideal of progress. All this in spite of the anti-American position of both governments. This process of technological "Americanization" has not been sufficiently studied. The purpose of this article is to examine such process in the railroad, mining, and energy sectors.
