[ Abstract ]
Under the early Franquismo, engineers played a leading role in the design and implementation of economic policies. The foundations of this economic leadership - which was linked to a very particular approach to economic matters called ingenierismo - were laid during the first decades of the twentieth century. The aim of this paper is, in the first place, to analyse the reasons that explain this economic leadership and the so-called ingenierismo. Second, this article compares the Spanish case with the performance of the Portuguese engineers under Salazar's dictatorship, discussing the differences and similarities.
