[ Abstract ]

This article aims to review the current situation of the industrial and commercial documentary heritage produced and preserved in the course of the last centuries in three of the four Autonomous Communities which politically constitute the North of Spain: Asturias, Cantabria y Galicia. The review begins with a summary analysis of the historical circumstances that were conducive to the genesis of that heritage, and the affinities and differences among these communities that determined the particular characteristics of the documentary heritage produced and preserved in each of them and the close ties in some cases established in their economic and industrial fabric. From this analysis, it describes and analyses the situation of each Autonomous Community and it gives a detailed report of the archives preserved which is completed, in some cases, with historical references to the industrial and commercial entities that generated them. The methodology followed has lead to a structure of the content which reflects separately for each community the links between industrial history and documentary heritage, the initiatives of the public institutions for the recovery of this heritage, the work carried out by the centres for the preservation and spreading of the cultural heritage and by research institutions, the legal framework and the protective measures, the position of the chambers of commerce and the business associations and federations, the social initiatives of associations and groups of experts, the situation of the business archives in the public and business sector, the reference to other funds of interest or related to this kind of heritage and the bibliographic production created in each community on this subject.
