[ Abstract ]
This paper is intended to analyze the role played by the railway
in Karl Marx’s work. To this end, we have studied his workbooks,
his published works and correspondence. As a result of the
research it can be pointed out that, during a first stage
ranging from his joining to the Rheinische Zeitung until his
arrival in England, his main contribution was the consideration
of the railway as an engine of the transport revolution that
made it possible the consolidation of capitalism. Marx also
claimed that railways would form part of the public sector.
What’s more, during his English stay, Marx studied the way in
which railways, as one more component of the transport industry,
do intervene in the production and circulation of capital.
