[ Abstract ]

A lot of major historical stations have been replaced by banal buildings that justify their existence based on concepts as functionality or safety. Material values such as spatial configuration, or immaterial ones such as the spirit of the place or the collective memory, have been eliminated or devalued. This paper performs a comparative and critical analysis between the historic stations and the new ones in order to determine what is actually happening with the heritage of the stations and how far there is between the declarations and the performances. In the new buildings we are losing not only the architectural quality, but a part of our recent memory, as well as a public space. This silent disappearance and the collective disaffection may lead us to the sad conclusion that the historical stations are doomed to die or to lose their patrimonial consideration for the sake of their commercialization and hypothetical speculation.
