[ Abstract ]

This communication is divided into three parts, unequal in their extension. The first part, very brief, introduces some basic biographical background of Charles Blacker Vignoles. The second, also brief, presents the work of Vignoles as Chief Engineer in the Tudela-Bilbao Railway and offers an update on the old projects that preceded the railway. The third section focuses on the role of Vignoles as Sole Referee or Friendly Arbitrator. Once the guarantee period of the line had elapsed, differences arise between the builders and the managers of the Tudela-Bilbao Railway Company, and the parties turn to Vignoles to settle the disagreements. The decision taken by the former chief engineer precipitates the temporary receivership of the Company.
