[ Abstract ]

As spatialized system representing the territorial transformations, the railway network is a very important field of research for an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the relationship between the land and the society. In this sense, this document is aimed at highlighting the main features and the nodal points of the evolution of the Italian railway network from 1839 to today, in order to explain the reasons underlying its current 'High Speed' system and its development perspectives towards integrated mobility within the European Community. In line with the integration objective of the Italian railway system, the 2017-2026 Business Plan, launched in Italy in 2016, was finally taken in consideration. Among the business plan objectives there is not only to include inside Ferrovie dello Stato Italiano further metropolitan transport companies and different ones, but also to build agreements and collaborations so that FS Italiane can become an international provider of global integrated mobility.
