[ Abstract ]

This article analyzes the debate about the concept of “city” that was developed in the middle of the 20th century with Murcia (a small city in the Southeastern Spain) studied as a test case. This debate was ongoing both before and during the deep urban transformation that Murcia underwent during the 20th century. The origin of this study is the contrast between the image of an industrial city that is clean and adapted to road traffic, and the real situation of Murcia. If at first it took the form of a debate, later, during Franco's regime it became a real assembled discourse that explains the great transformation that has taken place since the 1950's. I believe that this viewpoint can help us to better understand how other cities also went through a deep transformation of their urban area.
