[ Abstract ]
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the development of the water supply service in the city of Porto Alegre –Brazil– on the basis of the relationships between private interests and the public sector. To achieve this goal, the paper has been divided into two parts: in the first part it is discussed the emergence of a modern water supply system promoted with private capital coming from the companies Hdráulica Porto-Alegrense and Hydráulica Guahybense; in the second part it is highlighted the partial decentralization of the service started in 1904 and it involves the gradual expansion of the public water supply held by the Porto Alegre municipality. The initial chronological marker set for this paper is the year of the company Hydraulica Porto-Alegrense creation (1861) and the end chronological marker highlights the closing year of the First Republic in Brazil (1930).
