[ Abstract ]

Built the general lines that linked the Basque country with the center of the peninsula, the weaknesses of rail transport at a more local level soon came to the fore. It was not just of internal relationships of Biscay but also of this territory with neighboring provinces. Many were initiatives that longed for the construction of railways in Biscayan territory. Within these initiatives, he stressed that one of a small group of entrepreneurs outside the major investors Basque groups. This group of entrepreneurs, led by the Biscayan family of the Igartua, promoted the construction of a railway that, starting from Bilbao, Durango from reaching. Later this line was extended to San Sebastian forming part of a complex network of narrow-gauge that attended the Basque territory and which ran by all the Cantabrian. The performance of these Biscayan promoters is limited within a business focused purely on rail transport with a policy of continuous renewal and extension of the services provided.
