[ Abstract ]

This article addresses innovation paths of tourism on the French regional Aquitaine Riviera from the beginning of XIXth Century to the end of the XXth. Radical innovation means there in the core of the XIXth Century the conquest of “the empty space territory”, supported by Saint-Simonian action of the Brothers Pereire and of Napoleon III and his wife. Aquitaine tourism was definitively recognized as a major sector at the beginning of the XXth thanks to the invention of a specific imaged denomination, the Silver Coast, which was supposed to introduce a real touristic identity and coherence. A decisive change, accelerating the growth of regional tourism, was after 1945 the progressive intervention of French State as a neo Saint-simonian regional planner, designing a new coastal landscape. Thanks to innovative practices matching democratization, diversification and sport activities, these tourist innovation paths led during the 1960’s to a regional dynamic combining landplaning, environmental normalization and social standardization. Thus the Aquitaine coastline planned by the French State during the 1970’s and 1980’s tried building a new tourist innovative product, fed by surf complex, ecotourism and naturism, considered as a regional label or trademark.
