[ Abstract ]
The impact of the First World War on the Spanish Merchant navy, and especially on the Catalan navy, can be measured with different parameters. One of them is the creation of new public limited companies in the navigation business. In the present paper we deal with the general framework in which the Merchant navy deve-loped during this period, under the State’s growing control, and some examples of companies set up between 1917 and 1921 according to their capital stock, their founders and the features of their activities.
