[ Abstract ]

In the following work we analyze the role of the train in the Almeria’s economy from the agricultural point of view, exactly in relation with the exports of the known as «ship grape». The above mentioned analysis appears from a double perspective: the consideration of train as a logistic alternative (its possibilities to complement or substitute the steam ships), and, at the same time, as a commercial alternative (its possibilities to introduce a fresh product on new markets). The grape business led the economic evolution of the province of Almeria during the final years of the XIXth century and the first third of the XXth. Packed in barrels, hundreds of steams took grapes from Almeria to the foreign markets across the international nets of the maritime trade, developed in the middle of the XIXth century and whose fundamental axis was England. This market model altered drastically after the Civil War. With the international markets closed and the petrol rationed, the train became almost the only possible way of marketing of the Almeria grape on the national market, playing a protagonist role that was diluted by the reopening of the foreign trade and the progressive generalization of the land transport as a formula of goods movement.
